Boats n’ Bears

one sunny day we packed up our lunch to go out on the boat. The lake is across the street, so it’s a short ride to the launch. we travelled down the dirt road and across the highway, with ista and tota telling their travelling road stories, when suddenly mommie calmly says ” look, there’s a bear ” ista and tota looked, and then mommie changed her mind, and said “maybe it’s just a big dog, it is kinda far away” ista hit mommie a couple of times for scaring her and I was still looking around to see what they were talking about. Then mommie said, excitedly “it IS A BEAR, it’s galloping across the road” tota was screaming, ista was yelling for mommie to get the camera out and by the time mommie got ahold of the camera, apparently it had gone into the bush. Meanwhile, in the flurry of activity, I didn’t see a THING! I was really disappointed because I am of the bear clan, like my ista and tota, and I really wanted to see a REAL bear. At the launch, ista was telling all the fisherman about the bear up the road, and it seemed like it was a real sprint to get into the boat and on the water. It was a quiet day on the lake, and only a few boats out, even though it was a beautiful sunny day. We found a good spot to float and have lunch, and I played with my trains in the cabin. After lunch ista announced the need for a potty, so we went under a bridge and to another boat launch that had a porta potty. On our way back we hooked up the fish finder and looked for fish. mommie threw her line in the water, and even though the fishfinder said there was fish everywhere, she didn’t catch a thing. I loved my ride on the boat, it was my second time, and I was no less excited … I liked the splashing of the water, and when the motor goes brmm, brmm. When we were unloading, mommie and ista thought they heard a bear in the woods, so tota chased me down and dragged me into the truck until mommie and ista were finished with the boat. We didn’t see the bear again, he was probably out catching fish 🙂

oh, i’m sure one day you’ll see one, fellow Bear. just don’t try to play soccer with any of the smaller ones, as there will usually be a BIG one nearby. when brocc and i backpacked in killarney ON many years ago, we were astonished to see a big black trundle across our path not even 10 feet in front of us. it glided by with hardly a sound and disappeared into the woods… magic. we slept (a little less-)soundly in our flimsy tent that night!

Glad it wasn’t a close encounter. I have a healthy respect for bears (eg – deathly fear of).
